Feeding the Birds

My eldest son came home very excited about a school project that made a simple and quick bird feeder.  The crafting table was set up and we decided to encourage and help the little chickadees specifically.  These adorable chubby birds stay here all winter and must be hungry.

IMG_20150208_152720Peanut butter, empty toilet paper rolls, some yarn or string and a bucket full of wild bird feed (seeds) littered the table and pretty soon we had five little feeders to hang on the tree out front.  The seeds held fast to the rolls once they had been smothered in peanut butter and we knew in a very short time the birds would notice and have a hearty feast right by our front door.IMG_20150209_113805_1Little things like this change a family, and this was a change for the better.  The wild neighborhood birds are of course not really our pets, and it is best that way, but we can still feel an affectionate attachmeant to them as we continue to serve them in this way.  It has encouraged an awareness about the little living creatures around us, a kind concern to keep up the fresh feeders so our little feathered friends can rely on a meal from us, and a calm pastime for the whole family to share.  Thanks to Great Grandma Hicks we have a fabulous pair of binoculars and can sit in the reading room watching hungry guests arrive and partake.  Mostly we have chickadees and the small woodpeckers but we all have hopes we will noticed other varieties of birds soon as well.

Have you discovered any new and simple interests this winter that you can share with the family?  I always like it when something this healthy and character building is affordable and easy to do.  Take some time to watch the birds my friends!

Nice write up Rebecca. As you know I love watching the birds. I had some left over fish crackers from when Jesse & Casey were here and put them out last night. It was fun watching the Whiskey Jacks discover them and take them away to hide as quickly as they could.

Considerate and polite comments are always welcomed.
